Okay, I've been staring at the Blogger box for like 15 minutes, which means post of randomness is the only way to go:
• I've finally discovered the key to getting people to talk to you on Twitter—WATCH TV. Who knew? I'm watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer for the first time and tweeting about it each night (at #firsttimebuffyviewer), and my goodness the Buffy fans have come out of the woodworks! It's been fabulous fun, to interact with people on Twitter. Believe it or not, I don't really get that many replies on Twitter. I was starting to think I was boring!
Well, now I know—I just need to watch more TV. When I'm done with Buffy, I'll have to hold a vote for the next popular-show-I-never-watched. Star Trek: Next Generation? Battlestar Galactica? LOST? Dr. Who? Oh, the possibilities.
• And, of course, since I'm chin-deep in edits, I have a new book idea! I am in love, guys. Rapturous, crazy love. The kicker? It's a HISTORICAL (with a touch of the paranormal [as in actual ghostly things, not creatures]). Which means RESEARCH. Because I don't have enough work. Oh, brain, you hate me, don't you?
But I LOVE this idea. It's fun and offbeat and new and as out-of-genre as usual. There is a plucky band of scamming orphans, ghostly apparitions, grizzly deaths, and a creepy girl who knows things, all set against Gold Rush Era San Francisco.
Basically, I want to make out with this book.
*end random*
You are crazy awesome, and I can't believe you've never seen Buffy before. I own the original movie as well as the entire series on DVD. Personally, I have to recommend Battlestar next and then you absolutely have to watch Joss Whedon's (creator/writer of Buffy) other shows: Firefly and it's movie, Serenity, and Dollhouse. I am a Whedon fangirl, and I think you could be too haha. :)
ReplyDeleteThe new book sound amazing! I can't wait to hear more about it. You should read the Dreamhuter Duet by Elizabeth Knox, it's kind of an historical fantasy that's pretty awesome.
As to your lack of Twitter responses, I apologize lol. I haven't been online much to send you any cookies or tell you just how much win you're made of. :P
Have a terrific Thursday!
Amanda, I have seen Firefly and loved it! And Serenity. I saw the first season of Dollhouse and liked it, but was also bitter because Fox canceled Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles (my FAVORITE show at the time) in favor of Dollhouse's second season...AND THEN THEY CANCELED THAT TOO.
ReplyDeleteOh, Fox.
What the frak!?! You haven't seen Lost or BSG? Come on...
ReplyDeleteYou must watch LOST next. Talk about genre-busting! Sigh, I miss that show so terribly much.
ReplyDeleteOh but don't forget about Veronica Mars. That one is a must too ( and I saw on Twitter that you haven't seen it yet. It's great!
ReplyDeleteI vote Veronica Mars and/or BSG. I'd totally @ you for those. ;)
ReplyDeleteYay random! Your new book idea sounds totally awesome. I still need to watch Buffy myself one of these days...
ReplyDeleteI've been loving the Buffy tweets! I keep telling(okay threatening) my husband that we need to watch the whole series again. I love figuring out where you are and I can't can't can't wait until you get to some of my favorite episodes, plus the dialogue is amazing!
ReplyDeleteI still say 'bogart the chips' because of Xander and now my step-son, a non-buffy watcher, says it! It's pervasive!
I loved Sarah Connor Chronicles too and was sad to see it go. Fox cancels all their best fantasy/sci fi shows. :(
ReplyDeleteLOST is amazing, but you'll seriously have to watch the entire show all the way through or you might go crazy. And Veronica Mars is one of my all time favorites as well.
As a Brit I have to recommend Dr Who. I was there on 23 November 1963 (the day after Kennedy was assassinated so not hard to forget that date) and I will have hardly missed an episode. I imagine when you talk about Dr Who you only mean the recent revival from 2005 on. If you do do watch it in order; it makes a difference. Unlike shows like Battlestar Galactica the new show was not a reboot and the story of the Doctor runs effectively from the original series to the 1996 film (which was actually an okay film and Paul McGane's version of the Doctor was quite inspired) and then onto the new series. The only thing we miss out on the regeneration from the 8th to the 9th Doctor; the film begins with the 7th Doctor and we see him die and regenerate.
ReplyDeleteOkay I'm starting to get all geeky now so I'll shut up.
Heh. That must be my problem. No TV. But it's not really a problem, per se.
ReplyDeleteDon't bother with LOST. The first season was great, but the rest dissolved into sloppy writing.
ReplyDeleteInstead: Doctor Who! Doctor Who! Doctor WHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
I'm one of the ones who has been posting to your Buffy posts. I only just watched it over the summer myself (yay Netflix!). I have to say, I don't usually respond to many tweets of the people I follow because I don't want to look stalkerish or scary. Now I realize, that's what Twitter is for! So I'm trying to be more chatty. The nice thing is, the tweeter can always just read it and move on, and not have to reply. (But you did, and I squeed - I know. Deep down geek girl!) And yes, I'm checking out the Anime section after Charmed!
ReplyDeleteI vote for Doctor Who, all the way, baby! Matt Smith is the current Doctor, who is dreamy, and my crush. Bow-ties are sexy.
ReplyDeleteThe David Tennant years are great, too.
Oo, your SNI sounds fun! I love the Buffy tweets - they make me all happy because 1. I love Buffy to death and seeing someone else experience it for the first time is kind of like watching your kid's first experience with soda. 2. I love remembering all the old episodes. My vote for your next program - Charmed. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna cast my vote for Star Trek: TNG. Just my $0.02.
ReplyDeleteThat book idea sounds interesting.
Ha! I've never watched any of the other shows so I'm not sure what to suggest. A part me has always wanted to watch Star Trek, but I have resisted...
ReplyDeleteI understand your historical pain. I have wanted to write this historical story for years now but I've been put off by all the research (mine's about a real person) and the fact that I only have one historical idea. Maybe if you write yours, I might be inspired to write mine. Good luck!
Two things. You must watch LOST and I adore the gold rush era.
ReplyDeleteYay! Thanks for the shout out! I kind of want to make out with your book, too, but I think I'll stick with my new shiny idea that only took 2 years to get here. I love me some Scotland. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm diving in here, elbows flying, to say that I also recommend watching Dr Who next!
ReplyDeleteAll I have to say about Buffy is, it's amazing and you're going to enjoy it. Oh wait, also, be wary of the "season 8" graphic novels. It's a trap!
LOL. TV = hits, who woulda thought? I just watched Firefly for the first time and <3 <3 <3 Loved it. Buffy is on my list. I'm still a Buffy virgin at the moment. I love your genre-busting props. I call it genre-bending myself, and am a fan. Must check out Monarch...
ReplyDeleteThis is me, another Buffy fan coming out of the woodwork. :) Are you watching them on DVD? If so, watch the commentary whenever Joss is on it! I kid you not, every one of his commentaries is a writing lesson. I credit him for teaching me how to write first.
ReplyDeleteI love that you're loving Buffy. Also, I vote for Heroes, if only because I've started watching it again on Netflix during down time at school. Or Lost--I've only seen one episode of Lost. It'd be cool to watch with another first-time viewer.
ReplyDeleteDoctor Who. Trust me. Twitter LOVES Doctor Who.
ReplyDelete(Plus, *I* love it.)
All writers should watch Dr Who! It's an amazing show :}
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous that you have some many wonderful TV shows ahead of you that you haven't seen yet :-)
ReplyDeleteHah hah hah! I LOVE it when you feel like you want to make out with your new book!!!!
ReplyDeleteOk you MUST watch Doctor Who especially if you love Sci-Fi/Fantasy. I'm not a huge Sci Fi fan but I cannot say enough about this series. They have all the recent ones on Netflix. Start with the series with the Ninth Doctor (2005), the first episode is called "Rose." I'm a fairly new convert to the show myself--only a few months--but my husband and I are addicted! We've completely caught up to the new ones with the Eleventh Doctor.
ReplyDeleteI'll stop gushing now--I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to that show.
Also...congrats on entering the historical domain for your new book. I LOVE writing historicals--the research is so much fun!! Especially when you're looking into a completely different culture. It's a lot of hard work and sometimes (OK, a lot of the time) I get sidetracked in the research because it's just all so interesting to me, but it's worth it! I thank the American Girl series for igniting that passion. :)
