Ninja Girl & The Stitches Nightmare

So this happened. That would be my Ninja Girl in the ER awaiting stitches. She fell at grammy's house, bouncing around and excited to go to the park. Instead of slides and swings she got 15 stitches—5 in an underneath layer, and 10 on the top layer. (I hadn't even known about LAYERED stitches, but apparently when the cut is deep enough...)

You'd think that'd be enough trauma, right?

Well, when they took the stitches out yesterday things got...troubling. Her eyes and forehead swelled up like crazy (Which is why I'm posting pics for once because she hardly looks like herself!), and even though the ER swore this was normal it didn't SEEM normal for swelling to happen five whole days after and not on the day of.

Promptly after I took this picture, her scar burst open, oozing puss and blood like a giant zit. And it just kept going, clearly infected and NOT normal. Urgh, ER. I was not wasting more money talking to them, so I had to wait out the night with poor Ninja Girl and take her to her doctor this morning.

He was not pleased that they didn't acknowledge the infection, and now there isn't much we can do except keep the thing gauzed up and cleaned while the antibiotics do their work.

Ninja Girl is taking it like a champ, though, even if she looks like she's been in a fight. She's been shockingly cheery through it all, save the shots this morning. I think she cried more over those than anything else, which made me laugh. I mean, she's got this HUGE wound on her forehead that is swollen and infected and oozy, but those two needle pricks brought her to her knees! Ha.

Anyway, this has taken up a large bulk of my life this week, and it seems as if this will continue for the coming weeks. It's been a scary and weird thing to deal with, as it is the first time either of my kids has had an injury that couldn't be fixed with a kiss and a bandaid. It's been quietly stressful for me, I think, sucking the energy out of me (And I'm sick yet again, yay!). There's nothing quite so horrible as watching your children suffer, even when they do it with far more cheer than you ever thought possible.

  1. That's terrible! Isn't it amazing, though, how resilient kids are? Hope she gets healed soon.

  2. So sorry to hear it.
If it helps, she's adorable (...even with the big ugly puss scars). =D
Best of luck to both of you!

  4. Oh, Poor Ninja Girl. My little guy had glue put it, ripped it out, we returned to the ER and did stitches the 2nd time. I was not pleased with the ER either. (This was ages ago)

    Hope she feels better soon!!

  5. Oh wow, that's horrible. I'm glad the doctor knew what he was doing and put her on antibiotics right away. I hope she improves soon.

  6. So sorry. She's such a cutie and you can tell from her picture what a trouper she is. My daughter had a febile seizure about 6 weeks after we adopted her. Twice. Totally scary but thank God she was okay. Take what time you need to take care of her and get your writing done.

  7. I'm glad to hear she's doing better. Bringing a child to the ER is scary enough. Having to deal with this kind of an aftermath really is a nightmare.

  8. Aw, what a cutie. Kids are so amazing when trauma strikes. Luckily, they heal really fast, too. Sorry to hear about the infection. Don't forget to give her probiotics when this is all over after all the antibiotics. I'm so sorry to hear you had to go through this. My son has been to the ER over ten times with stitches, broken bones, even a head injury requiring brain surgery after doing a head dive out of a tree, but he keeps on rocking. I swear, it never happens when they are snowboarding, skateboarding (well almost never there, save a broken wrist)or other crazy sports. It's usually when they are just minding their own business or doing something like walking down a sidewalk.

  9. She certainly looks like she's handled it well. Kids have an amazing capability to 'bounce.'

  10. Oh no!! I would be a mess! Poor baby. I hope it heals quickly. I still remember our first stitch visit. I have three boys...so I knew it was inevitable but it still horrified me! :) I will say I was pretty proud of myself for keeping my cool! :) Good luck to you mama, take care of both of you!

  11. Oh no, Ninja! She's so tough :) At least you know now that she is more than capable of handling trauma. Not a fun thing to learn at all, but something positive in the face of injury!

    Kiss her for me :)

  12. Poor thing! I hate when kids are sick or hurt--so much harder to deal with than your own sickness/injury. Feel better soon little one!

  13. Oh, that poor kiddo! I'm so sorry for both of you! What a rough time you've been having. I hope it's all downhill from here and she's doing much better soon.

  14. You can't be a ninja without getting a few serious head injuries.

Hope she heals quick. But even with an ouchie your girl is super-cute, and seems to have an awesome attitude. Just like you!

  17. That's such a sad story. And I don't like that ER-you're right. How can that be normal? I'm glad that you both survived that ordeal, and that SHE survived the shots.

Okay, I have to admit the nurse in me was a little fascinated by the giant zit part.

  19. Ah, man: wounded children. Not so fun. But luckily the sky is usually blue on the other side.
