Half A Sketch

This is half the sketch I'm working on for Sophia, who won honorable mention in my last contest. There's no way I'll be able to finish the background this weekend, so I thought it might be interesting for you to see a halfway sketch and then the finished product. While I'm happy with the figure, I'm nervous I won't get the background right. We'll see, I guess.

  1. This sketch is really interesting to me. There's a lot of emotion in this character's face and it makes me want to know more about her story.

  2. Oddly enough, I like the background unfinished. It lets me focus on the character, who by the way looks like she is lost or lost something. I love it. A picture worth writing about.

That's how I feel at every stage of drawing. "I like the sketch, but what if I ruin it by inking?" "I like it inked, but what if I ruin it with color?"

Good to know I'm not alone in that :-)

  4. Oh, I love the sketch, she looks so sad. I can't wait to see what it looks like with the background! =)

  5. It's amazing how much emotion you capture. I wish I could do that. But I guess I'd have to graduate past stick figures for that. :)

  6. You can write and draw? Nice. I love the shading on the character's face and neck. You can see the lines but it works.

I would love to read the story this character is in.

  7. Hey!

I just found your blog through Nathan Bransford's, and I have literally been going through the archives, reading all your posts. So helpful! Expect more comments from me soon.

  8. Love it. My daughter has started drawing anime and every time she shows me a picture I think, Natalie would be so proud. And of course, I'm so proud too. They're obviously no where close to yours, but everyone has to start somewhere. How old were you when you started drawing again?
